This practical course will help you understand how land was acquired, transferred and recorded in colonial Australia — and, importantly, how to follow the documentary trail it created. You’ll learn where to begin, what to look for and where to go next, tracing land from Crown grant to title deed using the records, finding aids and research strategies that reveal far more about your ancestors and the land they occupied.

Because the colonies operated broadly similar land systems, these foundations apply wherever your research takes you. Real records and worked examples are drawn from across Australia.
